The finger lime – citrus australasica - is Australia’s unique native citrus. It is a superfood, high in vitamin C, folates and anti-oxidants. Inside its skin are hundreds of juice-full pearls (vesicles) that ‘pop’ in the mouth with bursts of exquisite citrus flavour. The finger lime was consumed as a health protective food and used medicinally by indigenous Australians who lived in and about rainforests of what is now southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales for some 50,000 years before the citron (historically, cedrate) was introduced to the Mediterranean region about 2,300 years ago. Over 70 varieties still grow in the wild. Fruit fly barriers prevent the export of fresh Australia-grown finger limes to the world’s most significant markets e.g. the EU, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan, China, New Zealand and the USA. The export of finger lime caviar is not compromised by those barriers.
